What is Holistic Massage?

Holistic Massage recognizes the body, mind, and spirit as interconnected, not just individual parts. The body affects the mind and the mind affects the body. When you engage with both at once, you increase the likeliness of therapeutic benefit and overall relaxation / recuperation / prevention.

Relaxation is a state of decreased tension/ stress. Remediation is the process of improving issues through targeted manipulation of soft + connective tissues.

All services at Rela Noita combine relaxation and remediation techniques to promote optimal well-being.

What can I expect at my appointment?

Professionalism, privacy, and praxis. You are always draped appropriately (private areas securely covered) and qualitative feedback is always welcome during your massage. Your health information and personal comments are kept confidential. No unsolicited comments about your body. No up-selling, predatory marketing, or deliberate misinformation to boost sales. You will always receive the time you book. Duration listed = hands-on massage time (the clock starts when you’re on the table). If you arrive late, it is not always possible to receive the fully booked time.

Your massage takes place on a professional massage table with clean, 100% cotton linens that are changed after every client. Any tools are cleaned after use. The table can be heated according to preference. The massage cream is hand-made with organic raw shea butter, sweet almond or coconut oil, and a small bit of beeswax (kept refrigerated until use).

What is “mutual aid” and why is it necessary?

Mutual Aid is neighbors helping neighbors. It is the recognition that as humans we all depend on each other for care and the acknowledgement that not everyone receives the same level of basic support, rights, or everyday experience existing in a body. Mutual aid is a direct challenge to systemic inequality, on a local level. It is a practice with the intent to foster cooperation between individuals and benefit society as a whole. Mutual aid is about serving the community. Solidarity, not charity. We are all in this together.

How does massage fit into that framework? Bodywork is one experience I can offer that I believe helps make a difference in overall wellbeing. Regular care is not a luxury– it is a necessity that we have been convinced is frivolity. Feeling at home in your body is the foundation for the rest of your life.

Why is this offered to Black women, Sámi women, and refugee women in Finland? Unfortunately, health outcomes for women (especially non-white women) are still not equal anywhere in the world. For example, in the US, Black mothers are 3x more likely to die than white mothers during childbirth due to systemic inequality and institutionalized racism (not biology). While Suomi-specific data is limited due to how health/government systems categorize the population, several truths are still undeniable and unacceptable:

  1. Finland has the highest rate of domestic violence against women in the entire EU. Sámi women experience higher rates of violence than other Finnish women, mirroring issues of Indigenous-women violence also prevalent in the US.
  2. Women refugees in Finland statistically have poorer health outcomes, likely due to issues such as: accumulation of trauma, discrimination, and disadvantages in the labor market
  3. Black women face historic and ongoing racism/discrimination in education, social, labor, and healthcare in Finland

Coming from a Public Health background, it is imperative for me as a business owner to do what I can to address even just a tiny piece of this massive issue, in Finland and beyond. For me, this is an integral part of operating a business. Removing the financial component is eliminating one more barrier to care for women. I understand that this defies a conventional business model/understanding/narrative, that it presents its own challenges … and I deeply encourage others to find their own small ways of resisting the harmful world we’ve created and nourish practices that build the supportive world we want to see.

30 min 40€

A brief reset. An opportunity to see if the practitioner and massage style are the right fit for you.

45 min 60€

Time to start addressing one basic issue and supporting tissues.

60 min 85€

Balanced body-mind maintenance. The nervous system has a chance to relax and full-body fascia (connective tissue) can be affected. Most time will be spent working in one or two areas.

Notes: A solid introduction to the benefits of massage therapy. When our bodies/brains are processing a lot of data, it can take us some time to identify what we’re feeling. Often we don’t realize all the tension we are holding until we allow ourselves to soften.

Comprehensive calm. Beneficial for exploring both chronic pain and acute injury/discomfort. Head-to-toe relaxation: feet, legs, arms, hands, back, upper chest, neck, shoulders, head.

Notes: pressure + heat + time = diamonds! Allow space for the body to drop into a healing state. It is very common for the expression of pain to be different than the source…A stiff neck may be the result of tight hamstrings! 90 minutes let’s us investigate the source of pain.

120 min 160€

Deep rest + ease. Best for multi-issue focus or days when you could just use some longer care.

Notes: ideal for someone familiar with receiving bodywork, who enjoys extended time. Generally each side of the body is massaged for 60 min. If it is uncomfortable for you to be face-down for that length of time, side-lying is possible.
